While there have been no reported animal cases of New World Screwworm (NWS) in the United States, federal agencies are increasing efforts to prevent the spread of NWS to the US, which threatens livestock, pets, wildlife, and in rare cases, humans. There has been one travel-associated human case in the US. Read about it from the AVMA here. The AVMA has created a resource page on the New World Screwworm, which can be found here.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has provided a brochure about NWS. Download it by clicking here.
